I was watching House the other day when the eponymous protagonist, faced with two dying babies with the same unknown condition, prescribed different treatments to each. The scene was set that one baby would live at the expense of the other, but it was impossible beforehand to know which. Whether such a situation would exist in practice is questionable, but as a thought experiment it is intriguing. The medical team were repulsed that House was condemning a baby. To any reasonable person I think the alternative should be worse.
